Broward County boasts an efficient, integrated transportation system, from a major international airport and three commercial/executive airports to an expanding port that ranks among Florida’s busiest. The area is served by several major highways including Interstate 95, Interstate 75, Interstate 595, Florida’s Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway, as well as national, countywide, and local bus systems. In addition to the easily-accessible highway system, South Florida’s Tri-Rail offers a convenient commuter train service from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, with eight stops in Broward County alone.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and North Perry Airport (HWO), a general aviation airport, comprise an integrated airport system serving more than 23 million passengers per year throughout South Florida. FLL offers nonstop service to more than 60 U.S. cities and international service to Canada, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe. FLL is conveniently located just three miles from Fort Lauderdale’s central business district and 21 miles north of Miami. In addition, the airport’s proximity to cruise line terminals at Port Everglades have also made it popular among tourists bound for the Caribbean.
With more than 600 flights a day, FLL is one of the fastest growing airports in the United States and ranks 22nd among US airports in total passenger traffic and is the 14th busiest airport for international travel. In order to increase flight capacity, the airport has begun a significant expansion project with an anticipated completion scheduled for 2017. The $1.4 billion capital improvement project includes the redevelopment, expansion and modernization of the terminals and concourses, as well as the expansion of the south runway from 5,276 feet to 8,000 feet to accommodate air carrier operations.
Port Everglades
With more than 5.2 million tons of containerized cargo moving annually, Port Everglades has rapidly established itself as one of Florida’s leading seaports for containerized cargo and gateway for international trade. At the epicenter of a region that thrives on trade and tourism, the port serves as a hub and point of entry for companies that conduct business in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe, servicing more than 150 ports in more than 70 countries. Port Everglades is South Florida’s main seaport for receiving petroleum products including gasoline, jet fuel, and alternative fuels. The port is also home to FTZ 25, Florida’s first free trade zone offering incentives to importers and exporters.
Port Everglades is the world’s second busiest cruise port, with more than 3.6 million cruise passengers annually. The port is home to 42 cruise ships from 14 premier cruise lines, featuring some 2,000 different cruises. Ships sail year round, but the peak season is from November to April.
Various capital improvement projects at Port Everglades are currently underway including the Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), the Southport turning notch extension with Upland Mangrove Enhancement Project and the deepening and widening of the port’s entrance channel and intracoastal waterway. These key expansion projects will add five berths, widen and deepen the channel to 50 feet, and bring freight rail to the port. Additionally, Port Everglades is currently underway with $54 million in renovations to modernize and expand its four cruise terminals.
